"Dear Nicole,
First I wanted to let you know how happy I was when I found your website. We have had a number of dogs, both mutts and purebreds but have had the best luck with our shelter dog. Our lab died at only four from an autoimmune disorder. Our King Charles spaniel mix developed lymphoma and is only four. She is a mix, but is from a litter that was a result of an accidental breeding at a puppy mill. Our vet said that her parents were most likely from lines that had been in-bred for years. Only our German Shepard mix, who we adopted from a shelter, lived a full life. We had her for 13 years. We have young children now and we are hesitant to risk another dog dying so soon after we bring them into our family. We are also concerned about some of the issues that shelter dogs can come with. To be honest, we don't mind the extra work or the challenge, but we worry about one mistake leading to one of the kids being hurt. You seem like the perfect solution to all of our concerns. Almost too good to be true really.
Thank you so much for your time,
Interested New Puppy Mom"
(And they lived happily ever after with their new puppy!)
I have experienced many breeders. Most of them have a big barn or building out back that has dog runs and MANY MANY MANY dogs. The puppies are in a run with the mother. They usually have decent blood lines and wait lists for their puppies a mile long. But there is one thing missing! I believe the most important part....the lack of human involvement in the socialization process. Puppies are only handled when it is time to de-worm and vaccinate. The puppies learn to fear being handled and they pick up only on what they see in the dogs around them. A dog that spends most of its life in a run out back is a dog without the experiences of living in a home.
These breeders have 10-20 or more litters per year. They charge thousands of dollars for their puppies, but leave all the socialization and bonding up to you. So you pick up your puppy who is terrified of you, bring him inside your house to be introduced to sounds and experiences that he has never been around and hope that he turns into a calm and well-rounded puppy. Sometimes you will luck out and they turn out just fine. However, it has been my experience (and remember I have 14 dogs!) that the puppies that I obtained from breeders who raised them in their home and handled them from the moment they were born, were always calm and quiet. They did not like to soil their sleeping area. They were accustomed to being clean and warm. They were puppies who desired me right away when I got them home. They were not afraid of the vacuum cleaner or the sound of the dishwasher. They were already familiar with human sleep cycles, and they were incredibly affectionate.
These particular breeders only had a few litters a year because committing to a litter of puppies in your home for eight weeks is a huge thing! It requires round-the-clock attention and an enormous amount of cleaning. These amazing people are never in it for the money. They truly just want the puppies to go to wonderful homes. The truth is, there is no amount of money that could compensate these breeders for the love and passion they put into these babies. So that's what makes me different. When a litter arrives, my whole family gets involved.
We have a cot set up in the puppy room. There is always someone with the litter. We hold them and snuggle with them right away. When their eyes and ears open, we are the first thing they hear and see. We massage them and play with them. By the time their mom weans them, they desire us more than her. There is nothing like being greeted by a litter of puppies! When we step into their pen and sit on the floor with them, we know we are going to be crawled all over and loved on by all of them. If there is one puppy who is off by himself during this bonding time, we take note of that and make efforts to spend time alone with him. We know each puppy's unique personality so that we can assist you in choosing the perfect puppy for your home.
I make no apology for my prices. I feel as if I am offering something that other breeders don't offer... a home raised, well-socialized and calm puppy at a fair price. We will only sell to families who recognize the value in that. The huge sacrifice that my family makes to give you this kind of quality is unmatched by the best of breeders.
If you call or e-mail me to complain about the pricing, I will most likely not sell you a puppy. I will direct you to another breeder or your local animal shelter.
Happy Puppy Searching!!!
Blessings,
Nicole
