I have 14 dogs! Yes, that's right! 14! I guess you can correctly assume that I am a bit crazy! The truth is that I just love love love dogs. I always have! With that degree of passion, I have come to learn quite a bit about purchasing and adopting dogs. I have gone to the local animal shelter and have paid $200 for a rescued mutt, as well as $4,000 for a designer breed and everything in between. I have bought puppies from breeders, puppy stores, and even from a lady with a laundry basket full of pups on the side of the road. I have bought dogs that I should not ever have bought, and I have made really great choices as well. I have also "lucked out" on some purchases. I say all that to tell you it is my firm desire that any puppy you purchase from me is a wonderful and sound decision.
This is the hardest part for me, and is always different for each litter. I do not do this for a living, but there is a huge cost involved on my end...From the cost of the parents, their health care, the vet care for each puppy, and the quality of food, time and attention that goes into this...I cut no corners to save money when it comes to the care of my dogs and their puppies. My life stops completely when a litter is due. As well, it is my mission to contribute to recuse groups and donate one puppy per litter to a family who has special needs. To make this enormous sacrifice "worth it" to my family and I, it is my goal to make a certain amount per litter. When you factor in vet care, food, and supplies, as well as one puppy donation, and rescue donations, the portion I make is not much. You will find many breeders who do their own vet care and cut corners with expired vaccines, bulk/group dewormings, and no vet involvement. Many of these breeders over breed the mother dogs which actually make it so her puppies do not get the nutrients they need in the womb. It is all about money....and they make a lot! Each mother I have is only bred 3-4 times in their lifetime. In fact, I may breed her only once if she does not enjoy being a mom. Her health and happiness is what is most important to me first and foremost.
Given the fact that I do not know exactly how many puppies we will have until they are born, I cannot really give an accurate price.
I do require a $200.00 deposit hold to secure a place in the litter. Puppy Selection will take place at 5 weeks old in order of deposits received. The remaining balance is to be paid in cash at time of pick up at 8 weeks old. In addition, there are three required purchases going home day: A starter bag of puppy food, ear cleaner, and a bath/sanitary groom for the puppy. I cannot tell you exactly what food that will be, because I have 3 that I use, depending on whether the mother will eat it or not. What I feed the mother when she is nursing, is then what I feed the puppies when they start the weaning process. Usually the food cost is 25-30 dollars for a 5 pound bag. Because my kids help me with the baths and grooms, I like to pay them a little. I charge $20 for that. It's quite the assembly line! I give them their first bath, my daughters dry them and then I trim their feet, and sanitary areas. This is very important because you won't be able to get them groomed until they have completed the series of puppy vaccines and rabies shot.
My vet does a complete physical exam per puppy. They are individually examined completely. Heart, lungs, ears, joints, corneas, bites, etc.... We have them examined a few days after birth and at the time of their first puppy shots. One things that I do, that most breeders do not do, is that I have the vet harvest fecal samples from each individual puppy instead of bringing in a group fecal sample. YOU WILL NEVER SEE WORMS IN MY PUPPIES. I HATE WORMS. However, all puppies are born with them. They come from the mother's milk supply. Even though all my dogs are de-wormed, in animals, you can only clear them from their intestinal track. The worms that lie dormant in their bodies outside the intestinal track seep into the milk supply. I de-worm the puppies individually based on their current weights at 2, 4.5 and 7 weeks old with a fresh batch of dewormer from the vet. At 7 1/2 weeks old, they are then seen again by the vet who harvests that fecal sample and checks it at a microscopic level for any worms or eggs. If for some reason, they do not get the all clear, the vet will administer dewormer once more, however that has never had to happen yet in 10 years I've been breeding.
SO.... Price???
When the puppies are born, I will let you know. Usually they are between $1300-$1800 before deposit. If you are looking for a cheap puppy, I am NOT the breeder for you. If you are looking for a puppy who has been given the best start possible to ensure "healthy for life," that is what you will get from me. I am absolutely honest, transparent, and fair with all I do. It is my goal to make your experience with me be the best experience you will ever have with a breeder.
The time requirement and the cost involved in taking on the massive upkeep and care of puppies after 8 weeks old according to my standards require that I up my prices as they get older. Bad habits and much undoing on your part will occur if I don't begin the crate training process at that time. The puppy will be separated from his mom and litter mates and will be put on a very structured schedule. All puppies will continue to receive vaccines and de-worming from our vet and will live indoors in my home as they begin to be potty trained and command trained. The more work I do, the less you will have to do. Each puppy is very special to me and my family, so be assured that even though they get older, the care and love they receive will never change. Most breeders do not invest in their puppies like this, and most labradoodles cost twice as much as mine do at 8 weeks old if purchased from a breeder. If purchased from a pet store, you will spend 3 times as much and they will have learned to go to the bathroom where they sleep (which is a very hard habit to break once it starts!) If you are interested in purchasing one of my doodles, please email me at MosaicMutts@gmail.com.
I look forward to talking to you!
